Types of industries based on nature

Industrial Enterprise Act 2020 classifies industries in terms of its nature as:

Energy-based industry: Industries generating energy from water resources, wind, solar, coal, natural oil, gas, bio-gas or any other sources.

Manufacturing industry: Industries manufacturing goods by using or processing raw materials, subsidiary raw materials or semi-processed raw materials.

Agriculture and forest product-based industry: Business mainly based on agriculture or forest products such as integrated sericulture and silk production, horticulture and fruit processing, animal husbandry, dairy industry, poultry farming, fishery, tea gardening and processing, vegetable seed farming, * mushroom, vegetable farming or vegetable processing, tissue culture, green house, bee-keeping, honey production, rubber farming, floriculture and production, and forestry related business such as lease- hold forests, agro-forestry, etc. industries.

Mineral Industries: Industries producing any metal or mineral substance other than metal by excavating or processing minerals

Tourism Industries: Tourist lodging, motel, hotel, restaurant, resort, travel agency, skiing, gliding, water rafting, cable car complex, pony- trekking, hot air ballooning, Para sailing, golf-course, polo, horse- riding, etc.

Service Industries: Workshop, printing press, consultancy service, ginning and bailing business, cinematography, construction business, public transportation business, photography, hospital, nursing home, educational and training institution, laboratory, air services, cold storage etc.

Construction Industries:Road, bridge, ropeway, railway, trolley bus, tunnel, flying bridge and industrial, commercial and residential complex construction and operation.

Types of industries on capital basis

Industrial Enterprise Act 2020 classifies industries in terms of its capital as:

Micro industry: An industry with the following conditions is considered to be micro-enterprise.

  1. with the fixed capital not exceeding Rs 20 lakhs rupees, excluding house and land
  2. he entrepreneur himself or herself is involved in the operation and management of the industry;
  3. with a maximum of nine workers including the entrepreneur;
  4. with annual transaction of less than ten million rupees;
  5. with the capacity of electric energy, fuel or other oil engine to be consumed by the engine, equipment or machine, if any, used being twenty KW or less.

Cottage industry: An industry in the following condition is considered to be a cottage industry:

  1. based on traditional skills and technology
  2. labour-oriented and based on specific skills or local raw materials and local technology, arts and culture
  3. with the capacity of electric energy to be consumed by the engine, equipment or machine, if any, used being up to 50 KW
  4. And other industries as listed in Schedule-2 of Industrial Enterprise Act.

Small industry: Industries other than those classified as micro and cottage with fixed assets upto Rs 15 crores. industries.

Medium Industry: Industry with fixed assets ranging between Rs.15 crores to Rs.50 crores.

Large Industry Industry with fixed assets more than Rs.50 crores.
